Bass Generator is one of the most influential figures in the history of UK hardcore and rave music. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, DJ and producer Guy Kneeling became synonymous with the explosive Scottish hardcore and bouncy techno movement of the early 1990s, building a reputation for uncompromising music, relentless DJ sets and an energy that helped define an entire generation of ravers. Beginning his DJ career in 1987, Bass Generator was already producing music by 1989 and went on to establish Bass Generator Records around 1990. The label became an important outlet for the emerging harder side of UK rave, eventually releasing more than 40 singles during the 1990s and providing an early platform for music connected to artists including Scott Brown. His major breakthrough came through the legendary Rezerection events. Bass Generator became a resident DJ in 1991 before his popularity exploded throughout Scotland during 1992 and the years that followed. His mixture of hardcore, techno, gabber, high-speed rave music and what would develop into the unmistakable bouncy techno sound connected immediately with Scottish audiences. Where others were moving toward breakbeat and jungle, Bass Generator embraced the harder European sound — pounding kick drums, hoovers, Rotterdam-influenced hardcore and fast, aggressive mixing — while combining it with the uplifting energy and anthemic elements loved by UK rave crowds. At the height of the rave explosion, Bass Generator was appearing at major events throughout Scotland and across the UK, from packed clubs to huge all-night raves. His name became inseparable from the golden era of Rezerection, and his recorded DJ sets and mixtapes circulated throughout the country, introducing countless ravers to hardcore music. In 1993, he launched the legendary Judgement Day events, bringing some of the hardest and most exciting rave music of the period to Scotland and the North East of England. Judgement Day itself became an important name in UK hardcore culture, remembered for its atmosphere, line-ups and uncompromising musical identity. That same period produced one of Bass Generator's most recognisable records, “The Event” — a track that became synonymous with his sound and remains closely associated with the classic Scottish hardcore era. Bass Generator's popularity during the 1990s was extraordinary. Contemporary biographies credit him with performing at more than 1,500 events during the decade, selling over one million mixtapes, and even completing an unofficial record of seven DJ appearances in a single night. His standing within the hardcore community saw him ranked among the leading DJs of the period, at a time when rave culture was at its absolute peak. His influence, however, goes considerably further than statistics. Bass Generator helped create the bridge between the harder Dutch and European hardcore sound and the uniquely Scottish interpretation that followed. The combination of distorted kicks, hoovers, huge rave stabs, accelerated anthems and relentless energy became part of the blueprint for bouncy techno and influenced generations of DJs and producers who followed. More than three decades later, the name Bass Generator still commands enormous respect.
